Red Rum 1965-1995

Everyone has heard of Red Rum. The only horse to have have won three Grand Nationals including back to back wins in 1973 and 1974. Red Rum was second in 1975 and 1976 whilst winning an historic third National in 1977. He also won the SCottish National in 1974. Many felt Red Rum would have won in 1975 too, the jockey Brian Fletcher was harshly blamed for holding Red Rum back.

The wins are made even greater due to the fact that Red Rum suffered with an incurable foot disease of the bone. Many that remember Red Rum know that he was trained by Ginger McCain on the sands of Southport on Merseyside. Before every National this great horse was taken for a swim at Southport. Red Rum died October 18th 1995 and is buried at the winning post at Aintree race course. Home of the Grand National.
